Leap of Faith or Leap of Folly:
Is your plan in alignment?
A Leap of Faith can be exciting and great.
But what happens when it's not? It’s everybodies’ fear – That during their daring leap of Faith, it all goes terribly wrong. That they finally took the chance and jumped, they followed their inspiration for once, and now look. Everything is coming back to bite them in the butt.
So how do you know when your actions are in alignment with Flow, and will probably go right and lead you to your Destiny vs when your actions are untimely, ill advised, stemming from ego/control, and going to flop? Well, let’s talk about that.
In the past ten years, I've taken a few calculated leaps of Faith myself. By following the 5 step process I'm going to outline for you here, I lived the life of my dreams in one of the most idyllic places in the world: Sedona, Arizona.
And by following the process below, you can see where you are at with YOUR plans and dreams. Are you in the Flow and on the way to greatness? Let's find out!
Using your intuition is the #1 key to unlocking the mysterious leap of faith. Also, it's vital to have Faith. Faith means, knowing that things will work out, even when you can’t fully see HOW they will. In fact, a lot of times, it’s actually not rational or linear at all, how things work out. They just do. That's the Leaping, and the Faith part of it. It’s a very right brained, heart centered process. You simply have to have faith that your higher power, chance, what have you, will get you where you need to go. You let go of attachment to outcome, and you jump.
In a leap of Faith, you can't be sure of success before the jump, you simply have to trust. And that's what makes taking the chance on a Leap of Faith so terrifying. Or exhilarating, depending upon who you ask.
And it definitely depends on who you ask, whether they think the taking a leap of Faith is actually really stupid, or incredibly brilliant.
What do you think?
When we let go of the need to control and plan every last little thing, we open ourselves up to Flow, or, the Universe's genius.
Knowing that the Universe's genius is more genius than our genius, is the space that opens up, to create the genius of the Leap of Faith. Make sense? Well, let's keep going.
Why the Leap of Faith?
Most people (of any type of religion) will tell you that often a higher power answers our prayers in ways that we never could have imagined. If we keep an open mind, we are often pleasantly surprised how things turn out.
But, you have to get yourself out of the way, so that the Universe can do it’s work. When you let go of attachment to outcome, you become the beginner with 'beginner's mind' - ready to take on your adventure. It is only when our cup is empty that we can receive the extraordinary in life. So let go of your attachment to outcome and what you think you already know in life, and be ready to listen to your intuition.
For most of American society, understanding what goes into a seemingly ‘illlogical’ leap of faith, can help you understand how to integrate a freer way of being and to achieve balance to our constantly strategized lifestyles.
If you are one of those people who is bored of the same old hum drum, if you feel like nothing exciting or inspiring ever happens to you, if you are one of those people that plans things for months & months & months, (down to every detail) (ahem....Capricorns!), you can benefit from understanding this process. Using a more fluid approach to life, can at times be beneficial. If you are already someone who believes in leaps of faith, then I don't have to tell you how amazing they can be.
To be clear, I’m not advising the whole world to go jump off of a cliff. I am advising though, if you are a person who tends to only value rational scientific facts in your life, that learning a middle way, by understanding the opposite way (or the leap of faith way, when you throw the rational facts out), can bring you into balance in your life, and bring you more fulfillment. I’m not saying you have to adopt this way of being always, but understanding it can greatly enrich your understanding of the world, and bring you into balance, maybe for the first time.
PHASES OF A LEAP OF FAITH
Undergoing a few ‘daring’ leaps of Faith of my own in the past, I’ve come to notice that there seem to be a few phases to taking a leap of Faith. A process, if you will. Most importantly, understanding these 5 phases of a leap of Faith that I’ve identified, can help you understand whether your specific leap of faith is adviseable - or not.
Leap of Faith or Leap of Folly? Let’s take a look.
1 - DREAMING & BEING INSPIRED
Along with every leap of faith, comes the inspiration period. It’s where you get an inkling of an idea. The spark of inspiration. You’ve read a book that opened your mind. You’ve learned a new art technique that helps you to live in the moment. You’ve watched the Secret, and gotten really excited about manifesting, and what you can manifest in your life. You’ve met someone - a friend, community member, instructor, or partner that has changed your life by being the most incredible example of everything you want to be.
Or, you've just starting reflecting on your life. What would it be like if I believed in myself more? What if everything I want is absolutely possible?
So you want to make a big change, get some movement, seize the inspiration, go with this flow, and see what greatness will come. That’s all seriously amazing, and congrats, you are well on your way to a successful leap of Faith.
But that doesn’t change the fact, that change can be frightening. Not knowing the details of something, can be nerve-wracking. So what does dreaming and being inspired do for us? Why do it?
So we can grow, of course! So we can know adventure my friends. So that we can learn new cultures, new techniques, round ourselves out, take advantage of this beautiful life we get to live! There is SO much to do in this world.
It's often when we follow our hearts, that our Soul’s Purpose is made known. And besides, there are so many amazing things to do in this world.
I always think of that poem, with the old lady, asking the question: Who wants to be perfectly preserved at 85? The old lady is like, 'No....I want to slide into my grave sideways, wrinkled, wearing purple, knowing that I used my body fully and embraced LIFE while I was here.'
"Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting “Holy Shit! What a ride!” — Mavis Leyrer, age 83.
Part of fully embodying our lives, is sometimes taking a chance on something. It's sometimes, trying things in a different way than we are used to.
We are all on our own journey. To reach these higher levels of fulfillment, and to seize these higher levels of joy and consciousness, a lot can be gained by taking a well timed, conscious leap of faith. So how do you do that? Let’s find out.
2 - TAKING ENERGETIC ACTION
You Ask, Believe, and Receive. Just like the movie, The Secret, you seize upon the feeling that you’d like to have more of. Find ways to experience that feeling in your everyday life.
For example, if you want to be married but you’re still single, here’s a few examples of energetic actions you could take.
Ask yourself: Am I creating the mental and physical space for another person to enter my life, as well as reinforcing the feeling that I already have a fulfilling relationship in my daily life? Journal your answers.
Now this may seem weird, but trust me, the expert manifesters in The Secret recommend it as well. It is finding a way to feel the same feeling that you would feel if you already had something. Say your goal is being married. How would it feel to be married? How can you experience that feeling, right now?
More actions you could take: Buy a ‘wifey’ T-shirt, and wear it around the house. It will make you feel as if you are already a ‘wife.’ Practice self care, it will make you feel ‘cared for.’ Cleaning out the nightstand and side of the bed that your partner would sleep on is helpful because you are physically creating the empty cup, the space to be filled with that wonderful partner. Use visualization, see yourself with this person. Are you taking care of your appearance? Are you maintaining your friendships & hobbies? You get the idea.
By letting go of reaching our goal in a certain way that we control, we open up ourselves to inspired Flow in our lives.
When we follow these good feelings we get from our energetic actions, we are amazed where we end up.
3 - SIGNS & SYNCHRONICITIES
Once you start taking these ‘little’ actions, the Universe sees you are serious, and you will start getting feedback in the way of signs and synchronicities. Signs come in all shapes and fashions, such as deja vu, dreams, animal signs, or repeating phrases or numbers. The sky is the limit on that, because signs work with our intuition and in conjunction with Spirit to send us signs that will be meaningful to us (specifically) in the moment.
For example, the subject of getting married might suddenly start coming up a lot. People might start trying to set you up on dates. You might be asked out on more dates. You will notice, that as you put energy into maintaining the feeling of being in a significant relationship, that circumstances in your life will start to line up for having a significant relationship. Your new hairdo & fun loving vibe, it gets noticed. You start hearing the phrase, 'getting hitched' a lot. People start seeing you as more attractive because of the energetic actions you’ve taken, and you get feedback you are on the right track, with signs and synchronicities.
4 - RESEARCHING YOUR DREAM
This may seem counterintuitive, but often, a Leap of Faith involves doing your research.
If you are considering a cross country move for example, based upon signs you’ve been getting, like coincidences, deja-vu, and dreams, it’s wise to do your research too. Remember, God helps those who help themselves.
So while the animal sign you just got in the form of a beautiful wild wolf trotting across your path is beautiful and a reminder of the wild independence you wish to experience in Colorado, the wolf isn’t going to also construct your life for you – that’s your job.
So you must research moving trucks, calculate gas mileage, research property management companies, home prices, jobs, and pack your things. Without those actions, the miraculous, beautiful life of your dreams isn’t going to happen.
Keep in mind though, that throughout this process of researching and taking action, that we are staying open to our intuition, watching for signs and signals from Spirit, and remaining unattached to a certain outcome. For instance, if we’ve researched a certain moving company, and everything about it makes logical sense: it’s the best price, and most widely available moving company in the country, and we've gotten great reviews from friends. The only thing is, if you keep getting bad signs, bad feelings, and bad customer service from that company, it’s important to pay big attention to that.
Things happen for a reason, so if at every turn your ‘winning’ moving company is a headache and causing your inconvenience & extra work, that is a sign, that this company is NOT in alignment with Spirit or your BIG DREAM. There is a reason it’s not working out, and that needs to be weighed right along with the ‘logical’ research facts.
IT'S WORTH IT, TO LIVE THE LIFE OF YOUR DREAMS
Following your bliss, living the life of your dreams, taking a leap of faith – no one said it was easy, they just said it would be worth it. It totally IS worth it, but you will never get what you want in life without being willing to do the work.
If you want to get somewhere, even if it’s just energetic work you are doing, that is still doing the work. Each situation is different, so tuning into what work needs to be done and then doing it, is vital.
4B - CASE STUDY: SEDONA, ARIZONA
I’ll use my move to Sedona a few years ago as an example. I was a flight attendant at the time, and I could literally live anywhere in the country and just fly into work. Commuting isn’t ideal, but the benefits of living purposefully, in the town of my 100% choosing was appealing to me. I had gotten signs of hints & coincidences. I had asked an astrologer and he had said the Southwest. I had been through Sedona, and had spent time there in the past. It was SO beautiful. And I had heard, that it was a mecca for New Age Spirituality, and I was a yoga teacher, so why wouldn’t I move there? I wanted to learn more about New Age spirituality & yoga, and I heard Sedona is basically like living in a retreat 24/7. The beauty, but also the people that you get to spend time with, all into the same things. Some people call Sedona spiritual Disneyland. (lol).
I was still in the beginning stages of considering the move. At the yoga retreat I was on, my roommate was a famous Catholic nun, who was writing another book while she was there. She prophesied that I would move to Sedona and become an intuitive. It’s interesting that she said that, because I didn’t accept my psychic gift until years after I’d left Sedona. Isn’t it interesting though, that I was given the opportunity while living there to learn Tarot under a psychic, aaand I lived with a professional psychic Channel. So it’s interesting, how our Fate circles our lives, and the choices we make, or don’t make, and how things seem to circle round again. But anyway, I digress.
So, after all these signs and intuitive feelings and such, I got onto Craigslist to check out what the rent was like, and what type of places were available. Afterall, if it was like a bazillion dollars to live there, I wouldn’t get very far on my $20k/year flight attendant salary. I didn’t know anyone in the town, so I really had no reference point for costs, or how the residents were.
Because I didn’t know anyone there, it really did feel like a leap of Faith to me - things could still go horribly wrong. It didn’t make a whole lot of logical sense to go financially for me, I’d be better off staying where I was. Things were going well in my life. But I kept being intuitively pulled there. I had grown up in the desert, & my soul, something in me was calling. I felt it was part of my journey, that I would learn something very necessary there. So I took the step of looking up places to live, and possibly returning to the desert of my youth.
Literally, the first place on Craigslist that I saw, I’ll never forget it. It was a tanned, athletic dark haired man, with his shirt off, in a field, hugging a full grown tiger up on two legs, with a rainbow in the background. Literally! It was a most auspicious sign. I did email him, and he emailed back, and it actually seemed legit. He was a real person. But idk, I think my mind would have exploded living with that model of a man, and a tiger everyday. He said he was a trainer of big cats. I was like, not able to process all the goodness haha. But, it was yet another sign that I was on the right track.
WHEN TO GIVE UP ON YOUR LEAP
If everything is going wrong, things aren't working out, and you are feeling miserable - that is the Universe telling you that you are meant for other things, or at least to pause in your efforts and reassess.
ALL SIGNS POINT TO YES
Everything just kept lining up.
I didn’t rush things, and I finally had a few places lined up to interview the roommates in Sedona. I was so happy when I found the most amazing place to live near Bell Rock. Still, not taking things for granted, I went on roommate interviews in West Sedona, and one other one in the VOC as well. Roommate wise, the best roommates were in the Bell Rock place, hands down. And with it being in the most beautiful location also, it was almost a no-brainer. It was slightly more expensive, but when I approached the landlord with this, they went down on price to accommodate me. Afterall, being a flight attendant, and having another home in the MidWest, I’d only be home every 3 months or so. Considering this, utilities & space wise, the landlord had also hit the jackpot, so they didn’t have a problem adjusting the rent a bit. Win-win.
Looking back on my Sedona experience years later now, I have the perspective of time. Things were amazing there. I met people I needed to meet, I learned what I needed to learn, I grew spiritually, in every way it was perfect, and my health increased because I was so darn happy!
5 - DECIDING TO TAKE THE LEAP
At some point in this process, you get to the point where there isn’t anything else to research. It’s either going to work or it isn’t, and there isn’t always a way to tell, unless you just go for it. So you do! Or you don't. It's up to you.
A SUCCESSFUL LEAP OF FAITH =
A MEASURED LEAP OF FAITH PLUS NO-PRESSURE DECISION MAKING
After only one sign, it’s usually not enough to take a successful leap of faith. It’s best to have multiple signs, and to have the time and space to adequately process your feelings around the subject, free of pressure from other people, and financial stress around the situation and free of a deadline.
Coming to your own conclusion, based on your intuitions, feelings, signs, and research and free of pressure is the best way to make a successful Leap of Faith.
My move to Sedona, did look very ‘Fool-like’ & spontaneous to some of my friends looking on, and most my co-workers too.
They thought I was so brave and wild and free for making this change in my life, without much of safety net and purely based upon inspiration.
But really, after seeing my 5 step Leap of Faith process, I’m sure you can agree that it wasn’t so willy-nilly after all. In fact, this is a process that is open to anyone. I think most of you would agree, that 'smelling the roses' is what makes a life worth it in the end, anyway.
When you listen to your Soul’s calling and take a measured leap of faith, chances are, you won’t be disappointed in your life. This world is amazing. Go and take a bite of it.
