The Law of Attraction Got It WRONG - Illness & Soul Contracts
I walked into my friends’-friends’ informal energy healing class.
‘Oh good,’ I thought, ‘I can just relax and learn something inspiring.’ I had been invited by one of my best friends, Jen, who had a friend training with a famous energy healer in Phoenix.
"She’s been training for years," Jen said, eager to tell me about the Egyptian toe holding move that she had tried the week before. "I was instantly asleep when she did it," she exclaimed. "It was great. I think I dreamed too." "So... what was it then?" I asked. "She just held the tip of my toe." "Really? And did she keep holding your toe even when you were sleeping?" "Yea, she said she held it for 35 minutes." "Sweet."
Being interested in energy healing myself, I was eager to meet this lady. I wondered what fabulous teachings she’s learned, and what Donna Eden is like in real life! Donna Eden, if you aren’t familiar with her work, is this wonderful energy healer, and I’ll never forget the first time I heard her on air. Her voice alone, the enthusiasm this woman contains, and you can understand exactly WHY she’s an energy healer by profession. She has an amazing amount of electrical-good energy.
So, I walked into Bertha's house.
Quartz was draped from the windows, sea shell chimes hanging from the vents; and even though it was more conservative than I’m used to with it’s blue plaid furniture, I felt at ease and comfortable with what we were here to learn. Bertha wanted to brush up on teaching the class so she’d be ready for her upcoming series on energy healing she was to teach. So, I happily volunteered to tag along and rotate treatments, as well as sit in on her class and watch Donna Eden videos.
So, I walk into this energy class, expecting the usual relaxing day of learning about how we can connect to our spiritual energy, how to heal ourselves and others, acupressure points, tapping, this sort of thing, generally a positive and spiritual day spent with like minded people. No biggie, and this is what I live for as I’m just really into this sort of thing in general.
Now, before I go into much more, I will say, that I have some health issues.
My good friend Jen is well aware of my health conditions.
I have a few rare genetic disorders that affect my ability to be upright for very long at all, and I have 11 herniated spinal discs in my back. My back injury (caused by Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) has destroyed 48% of my spine, and seriously affects my daily living and even my gait.
But that is NOT what this article is about, this is merely the backstory.
Often, this plays out with Jen and I, in that, on the way to our womens' circle that’s 45 minutes away, I’ve taken to laying flat in her car in route, so I feel better for the actual circle of the night.
Anyway, so I made sure to ask Jen, can you just let Bertha know, that I have some medical issues, and that I may need to lay flat part of the time during the class? Jen said, No problem. I’ll let her know, and I really doubt it’ll be an issue because we’re the only two people in the class, and it’s held at her house, so it’ll be no big deal if you lay flat while we’re talking.
Ok I said. Sounds like it won't be an issue. So I agreed, and nonchalantly looked forward to a day filled with energy work, butterflies, and Buddhas.
Once I'm there, I notice that Bertha has a TON of supplements in her bathroom.
Like, a TON. The whole counter is covered end to end, there's no room on the counter for anything but supplements. Bertha talks exuberantly about how she uses liquid magnesium for this or that ailment and excitedly pumps out a bit for us to try on our arms. As I normally do, I ask questions about something that someone is excited about. She studies a lot, so I imagine she must know quite a bit about supplements since she’s so enthused about them. I agree, as she tells me that magnesium is great for all these things, like sleep, preventing migraines, and that most Americans are deficient in it. Yes, I agree, these are things that I’ve also come across while reading myself.
So then it happened - Suddenly, the conversation turned.
"Do YOU take magnesium?" Bertha pointedly asks me.
"Um, no.... But ya..... I know it’s good to take and stuff," I apprehensively answer.
"Well, you have something wrong with your back right?"
I’m taken aback by her directness. I haven't discussed my back openly with Bertha; the only info she has about my health is second hand info from Jen. I don't even know this woman!
She continued on elaborating, "Well, I had a really bad back problem 20 years ago, and I took magnesium and I cured myself," Bertha said smugly.
"Ok, well..... that’s good..." I kind of nervously agree and hope she will change the subject.
Bertha continued, "I was totally crippled and I had kids that I had to take care of. I had been out of work for days, and I needed the money, so I had to go back. I didn't have any choice. But I just tried really hard, and I healed myself with magnesium."
"Ok, that’s good. So, can you tell me about the acupressure point for headaches?" I attempt to politely sway her to the topic of class - energy healing.
So she shows me, and then launches into how I can cure myself with magnesium from my genetic back disorder.
I tell her, I’ve done all that, I spent 13 years in physical therapy, it’s not going to change, it’s just the way my life is now, I have a genetic connective tissue disorder. If you want to know more about it, please google it and get back to me. There’s no cure, it’s genetic, and it’s the cause of my back problems.
Bertha starts to insist that if I just belieeeved I would get better, that I would.
Because....."What we think about, comes about."
I'm not having any of that, and Bertha reluctantly takes down the info on my genetic disorder when she sees that I’m serious – I’m absolutely DONE with her grilling me about which supplements I take, which supplements I’ve tried for the last 13 years, and what healing modalities have I tried thus far.
She's wanting to discuss at length, in front of others I might add, my personal health condition. Not to mention, how inappropriate this is to derail the energy healing class, to discuss my personal health in front of others, and how uncomfortable this makes me feel.
Well, I can tell you, I've had quite the saga of treatments, healing modalities, supplements, and positive thoughts in the course of my illness. After 13 years of this, I'm kind of over it. Not to mention, I came to this class to learn about ENERGY HEALING - not about supplements and not to be told that if I just 'believed more' that I would heal. Yes, a polite detour of topic by our host is acceptable, however, I didn’t volunteer to be singled out and publicly quizzed.
I keep trying to change the subject, but she is NOT having it.
Bertha's convinced that I have caused my illness by the Law of Attraction and there is NO changing her mind.
What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is a widespread, to the point of being main stream, New Age theory, popularized by the movie, The Secret. The basis is that what we think about, comes about. In this way, we manifest our life circumstances. So if you want a million dollar home, you should visualize this million dollar home, and only think thoughts that are abundant and on the same vibrational level as a million dollar home. Were you to have doubts creep in and think, 'How am I ever going to afford that? I only make 20k a year,' you would be engaging in poverty mindset, and lowering your vibration. At that vibration, you would NOT be an energetic match to the million dollar home, and you would NOT manifest it. However, the Law of Attraction goes, were you to go tour million dollar homes, dress opulently, visualize this home twice every day in detail, and save towards your goal - the Law of Attraction states that your vibration would match that of a million dollar home, and people, circumstances, and coincidences would start to conspire to bring your wish about. In essence, the Universe will give us what we want - we just have to ask, believe, and receive.
The Law of Attraction Reversed
= New Age Illness Shaming = Spiritual Bypass = New Age Guilt (NAG)
So what does this have to do with illness?
Well, the problem happened when well meaning New Agers took the Law of Attraction (LoA), and reversed it. If we get good things by high vibrational thoughts about good things, we must get bad things from low vibrational thoughts about bad things.
If someone is ill, it's because they envisioned themselves ill, or they had such low quality thoughts that the universe matched their crap vibration with their crap illness. This is the Law of Attraction Reversed, and it is commonly used to blame and shame those who have an illness or condition.
The Law of Attraction Reversed is a convenient logic that makes people feel safe. It flows from this logic, that if we keep our thoughts high vibe, we can be safe from the dreaded ill-health conditions because those who have ill health have brought it on themselves.
According to the Law of Attraction Reversed, being sick is in our control. So it is not up to God, or fate, or Karma, or Soul Contracts - we alone hold the reigns on our health. Health is a choice.
In this way, it is common practice for New Age health practitioners such as massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, yoga instructors, and health coaches to bring a feeling of shame upon a person because they have an ailment.
Calling someone out publicly, (such as how Bertha did with me), is common practice. After all, if the client isn't getting better, it is the client's fault. (They keep thinking about being sick. They need to just stop that.)
But also, it should be noted, that I wasn't Bertha's client.
It is common for New Age health practitioners to call people out anyway, whether they are their client or not, and to do so publicly. Which is very inappropriate and violates consent & confidentiality.
There needs to be some better boundaries with that in the New Age community.
But where is all this fear, projection, judgement and shame coming from?
Why do New Age practitioners feel the need to call people out (at all) about illness?
The Law of Attraction Reversed is a fear based construct based on well meaning New Agers' fear of becoming ill themselves.
If illness is caused by 'being negative' then they can control & prevent their own illness by 'staying positive.' It is in this way, that healthy people can avoid having to confront the reality of the frailty of their own body, their fear of death and what it means if they can be struck down at any moment by illness. This can be terrifying, (to anyone really), to think about their own mortality and the amount of chance, and lack of control that is involved in being a human.
It is in the misguided New Age practitioners' attempt to understand life as being fair, things making sense, and them being safe - that they ultimately are projecting their fears and faults onto others that do not reflect reality.
So New Agers have come up with this handy dandy defense mechanism, called The Law of Attraction Reversed. If you've heard of Spiritual Bypass, this is the same exact thing.
Spiritual Bypass is using a spiritual concept to bypass feelings of discomfort that you'd rather not examine. So you say a nice little quip (such as the LoA) about something difficult and you are done with that subject.
Why does this matter?
The problem is, is that the Law of Attraction Reversed HURTS people - including new age practitioners themselves.
What happens is that well educated & respected practitioners commonly use the Law of Attraction Reversed to put other people down, to blame the client, and to shame others publicly in front of a group, such as in a class setting. Practitioners also find themselves with an illness, and then they face the shaming as well. They feel they cannot be honest about their health anymore to their peers & clients, and feel shame and that they must hide their condition because it exposes them as 'low vibrating' and negative. If they go on hiding their condition, then they secretly beat themselves up because they aren't being 'authentic' and living up to their own standards, and they spiral further into feeling bad about themselves.
This is the exact opposite of what you need to do to heal. Shaming only makes a health condition worse.
So as you can see, there is a stigma attached in the New Age community to having a health condition, as if this means a person is flawed. A moral judgement IS attached, and we are openly lectured by our peers about our 'mindset.'
But what happens when your mindset is really pretty good? You've done your Shadow Work, you've examined your values & beliefs, you've tried the supplements, naturopathic health treatments, yoga, diet, exercise, affirmations, you've gone to therapy, and you're still not healing? What then?
Well, the common practice is more blaming and shaming. It begins to sound like a broken record, wherever you go. If you cannot hide your health condition, you become a sitting duck for people like Bertha, waiting for the opportunity to move into judgement about someone else's health.
When we move into judgement of others, that judgement itself is a low vibrating emotion.
When New Age practitioners are judging others for their health condition, and shaming others publicly, they are bringing down their own vibration - by their very own logic.
This practice of blaming & shaming, and spiritual bypass via the Law of Attraction Reversed, has just got to go.
My experience with Bertha is by far not the first, nor will it be the last, and I have been publicly shamed in front of WAAAY more than two people before. Try a class of 10-20 people, while I'm quizzed (with an audience), about my private health conditions and expected to answer, lest I appear 'defensive,' 'rude,' or 'in denial of my shadow self.' I'm made an example of as someone who is 'low vibrating,' 'not evolved,' and 'unconscious.' Those are NOT compliments in the New Age spirituality field.
I'm NOT the only one this happens to, and this is why I'm speaking out.
It's not right. And, most importantly, it's not true! New Agers who blame an illness on someone's mindset without any examination of the facts, are being lazy, they are being RUDE, and they are pointing fingers. It is simply bad behavior people! So stop it!
I actually LOVE the New Age community, so I'd really love us to improve on this one aspect. Because we really do have some wonderful thoughts about the world, and great concepts that help many.
'Mindset causes disease' is a widely held view & I'd like to change that to something more accurate
This isn't some side-shoot of the New Age community - this problem of shaming people for their health condition, is rampant in the New Age community - a community that I know and love. People such as Louise Hay, of Hay House Publishing and the book, 'You Can Heal Your Life,' zealously advocate the thinking that our beliefs cause our health problems. Now don't get me wrong, Hay House, the publishing company that Louise Hay has created and all it's other subsidiaries, are kind of amazing. She has wonderful authors with wonderful books, mostly about spirituality & self improvement. This is a great thing.
But the problem is that this book, 'You Can Heal Your Life,' by Louise Hay, is oversimplifying the complex nature of illness. Sometimes, I agree with her, SOME illnesses WILL greatly improve with mindset changes & diet, but you cannot put ALL illness in that category. It's just damaging to generalize like that and assign to fault to people across the board.
If you aren't familiar with the book, here's an example. Back problems, for instance, stem from a lack of emotional support in your life. Get more emotional support in your life, say the affirmations in the mirror, and your back problem will go away. This is the affirmation recommended to 'cure' back pain: I trust the process of life. All I need is always taken care of. I am safe. Here's an article I googled on the subject, this is the first google result I got on 'Louise Hay You can heal your life affirmation back pain.' This is the most common suggestion you will get in the New Age community for a problem like back pain.
But what happens when affirmations don't work? What happens if you were born with hip dysplasia (which is a result of the bones not forming correctly), or you have a genetic defect in your back from a physical abnormality that can be seen on x-ray? What if your illness is in your chromosomes, such as Down Syndrome, and this defect can be seen in your DNA?
That's the part that this 'You Can Heal Your Life' theory misses. I think Louise Hay's work is powerful. I think it gets people to think about their Shadow work, their unresolved issues, and also to think outside of the box with their illness. That has great value and has helped thousands of people. But Louise Hay's work does NOT explain the full picture of wellness. I don't think anyone would deny that health comes from multiple factors.
This is the way I see it: Wellness comes from multiple factors, such as your emotional landscape (mindset), physical movement, environment, genetics, and your SOUL CONTRACTS. Mindset & emotions is only one of five factors that determines one's health, so it needs to be put back in perspective. Affirmations has had it's time, and there's still room for them in our New Age community. But continuing to take this out of it's proper context is harmful to the very clients & friends we are trying to help as healers, and to us as healers ourselves.
Oh Bertha -
So...Bertha. I wish I could say our energy healing class just got off to rough start and that we used "I" statements until we hugged it out, but sadly, it didn't go that way.
She persisted for 3 straight weeks, every Saturday, using my genetic condition as a class example, all the while feverishly demanding answers as to why I haven't gotten better.
After all, she believed she could get better - then she took magnesium, and NOW SHE'S FINE.
Each time she did this, I tried a variety of diversionary tactics, up to AND including, "I don't want to talk about my back, I came to learn about energy healing." I tried vague answers to illustrate my disinterest, she dug deeper. Change of the subject, she changed it back again. "I don't want to talk about it," was met with a return to the subject an hour or two later.
So I go to class the third week, thinking SURELY this woman will have gotten the point that I am coming to her class to learn about energy healing, and I don’t want to talk about my illness. But no. You guessed it. She hadn’t. She had not at all!
Finally, I lost all semblance of composure and politeness.
I was visibly upset and told her, “Listen, you wear hearing aids – so you can’t hear right? I’m not going to single you out in conversation in front of everybody and tell you that I can heal your hearing problem if you just take magnesium. That would be a LIE! There are certain things in life that just do NOT heal, and we have to accept them. And going around to people on oxygen tanks and telling them that if they take your vitamins that they won’t need supplemental oxygen anymore is just MEAN.”
"Ok. I will never mention your back again."
And the reason that I tell this story is to illustrate a point -
That the Law of Attraction gets it WRONG when it comes to illness.
Particularly, when a person's illness is part of their SOUL'S CONTRACT.
I wish I could tell you that Bertha was unique and this is the only time that I've experienced public shaming because of my genetic health condition, however that is not the case. Despite being part of the New Age community for the last 17 years, and being well read, well trained and knowledgeable, people commonly condescend to me, that if I just tried harder, or believed more, or tried _____, that I'd heal.
The whole thing they are not accepting, is the actual definition of a chronic genetic illness. By definition, chronic genetic illnesses are resistant to healing. This doesn't make me ignorant or ill-informed, or negative thinking. It just makes me a human with an illness.
I am a fan of the Law of Attraction
I was a huge fan of the movie The Secret, and I’ve accomplished things that can only be explained by manifestation in my life. I lived in Sedona, Arizona at the height of maximum Law of Attraction infiltration into New Age society and experienced the full fervor of it’s gloriousness around me.
For real, I’m not even kidding about that. I’ve manifested things the very same day that involved meeting someone from completely across the country who was an expert in the exact thing I said I wanted to manifest that morning. I wanted to afford a place in Sedona that also had harmonious roommates, and I did. I wanted to expand my mind, and I did. I wanted to take risks and live by faith, and smile under the stars at night, and I did. It was fabulous experiencing the Law of Attraction firsthand. Truly.
So while I agree that the Law of Attraction can be used to vibrate your positive intention to the world and beam up your order for life therefore manifesting your dreams, there are some things in life that are un-orderable.
If a Soul Contract is the Reason You Are Ill,
Thinking Positively Will NOT Heal You,
& This Doesn't Make You 'Low Vibe'
To the New Age Spirituality Community
I'm here to let the New Age community know, that as healers - we are setting the bar. And we need to improve how we are treating our peers, friends, students, colleagues and clients with an illness.
1. We need to make sure that before we spout off our opinion on someone else's life, that they are at least our formal client.
2. We need to make sure that we are not calling people out & Illness Quizzing by expecting their answers to personal & confidential health information in front of other people. If you truly want to help, please protect the person's confidentiality by discussing things privately. To demand answers publicly is a form of Illness Shaming.
3. We need to make sure, that if we are recommending Mindset changes, that we've talked to that client for a minimum of 2 hours of in-depth listening & discussion with that client to understand the situation. We simply cannot recommend Mindset work to a someone that we do not know. That client's Mindset may be just fine and it is (incredibly) insulting to criticize someone's Mind. Starting a conversation with an insult is never the way to help - please remember to have tact and put yourself in the other person's shoes.
4. We need to stop looking for something to 'blame' with an illness by Illness Quizzing. Remember, there isn't necessarily anything 'wrong' with a client who has an illness. Having gratitude for exactly where that client is & acceptance of reality are key.
5. Understanding of the Five Phases of Grief process. There are a lot of emotions that people with a significant illness go through because of all the things, people, & abilities they've lost. Accepting where they are at in that process and holding space for what IS, is key.
6. Being Mindful, Respectful, and Humble is necessary to establish trust & safety. If the client feels Shamed, Quizzed, called out & put down, any coaching or healing work is simply not going to be effective because the client doesn't feel safe. Being disrespectful and shaming someone who's sick is actually sending energetic daggers at their aura and is damaging to the emotional body.
7. DO NOT repeat the theory of the Law of Attraction to people struggling with an illness as if they've never heard of it before. It comes off as condescending.
8. Don't approach others with health, nutritional, or coaching advice if they've not asked for it. Sometimes an illness simply comes up in conversation. That is NOT an invitation to Illness Quiz, Illness Shame, or recommend Mindset changes, or recite the Law of Attraction.
9. If you feel the need to deny, blame, change, or fix someone else's illness, please consider that your need to deny, blame, change, or fix someone else's illness is coming from the ego and do some Shadow Work of your own. Afterall, it is truly, none of your business to know about, fix, or condemn someone else's life.
When we are speaking of healing ourselves, and healing others, and being mindful, and meditation, and enlightenment, and striving for all of these things; and then we turn around, and tell a client, or a friend, or a fellow student or our student, that they brought their illness upon themselves because they aren’t vibrating at a high enough vibration, therefore, it is THEIR FAULT if they don’t heal. I find this very NOT healing, and very condescending by our community to say these things. And I will say, that I know SO many good people who repeat that statement. Bertha is by far not the only one to use the Law of Attraction to shame someone with a health condition, and that's not ok.
Repeating the theory of the Law of Attraction to people struggling with a health condition, just makes you sound insensitive. It is not helping anyone.
Your advice is especially unwelcome if it is unsolicited.
I don't say these things to tear down our community, but to help bring you guys around to what so many people with chronic illness, autoimmune illness, genetic illness, and illnesses brought on by old age are experiencing when they are blamed and shamed for being ill.
Of course, use manifestation and visualization for your health. If it is in the highest good you will heal. Get those funky glasses with holes in them and see if it fixes your vision - but no one should be shamed for having an illness.
Invisible & Genetic Illnesses
Having an 'invisible illness,' means that I look ‘normal’ on the outside. Just how some people with MS look normal on the outside, but on the inside experience symptoms others can't see, I don't feel well on the inside. This is NOT because I chose not to - I don't feel well because I have a genetic disorder that I was born with in my DNA.
Just like someone with Down Syndrome, I have genetic mutations that have caused my illness.
However, I don’t think any New Age healer would ever tell someone with Down Syndrome that if they just kept their vibration higher, then they wouldn’t have Down Syndrome.
So what’s the difference? Can we change some illnesses with the power of thought but not others? And how come some illnesses respond to our mindset and others don’t? What about our Soul Contracts? Do they alter the course of our illnesses? Do the Soul Contracts we’ve chosen make us ‘low-vibrating,’ ‘unconscious’ people?
The Role of Discernment
Well, as you can imagine, being someone with an illness that used to teach yoga professionally, a spiritual entrepreneur, and a knower and lover of the Law of Attraction, these are the questions that I had to ask myself.
That’s what it’s all about really, is doing the individual discernment, to take a look at yourself, and really see – if there is something to learn by this sentiment, whatever it may be that is triggering you. Is there a part of my Shadow that’s being triggered here, by New Agers who tell me that my illness is because of my vibration, or is this sentiment just true-bonified, crap? Well, I had to ask myself this question.
And I asked myself,
Is there a higher purpose to my illness?
Have I learned things from this illness that I NEVER would’ve learned in any other way? Yes. Totally. At the core of my issues is this dynamic of independence vs dependence and my inability to allow myself to be supported. I was independent to a fault, strong to a fault, determined to a fault, absolutely too stubborn to accept help or ask for help, and I was absolutely terrified of depending on anyone else besides myself for money. In my childhood, money was used as a tool of manipulation and control. So, in my engrained pattern, the WORST thing I could be was a burden on others. The worst situation I could imagine would be to depend on others financially. And although I did not realize it, I measured my worth by my ability to work.
Once my illness manifested itself, it became necessary to deal with these values and beliefs that I had.
Had I not wrestled with my genetic illnesses, I never would’ve learned the feminine concept of work, I never would’ve healed my issues around my ability to receive, and I never would have learned that the value of a human is not measured by the output of their labor.
The value of a human is measured in spirit.
And while I would’ve agreed with this statement prior to my illness, I did not understand it. I could not embody it. I still measured my worth in my ability to make money, hold a job, and to be like everyone else. When I wasn’t able to make money, and work a job like everyone else, I didn’t know who I was. I beat myself up and blamed myself. I felt amputated and cut off.
I was destroyed by my value system that to be a worthy human, you must work.
And while this lesson may seem very simple to you, for me, it took my whole world falling apart to realize this. We are all on our own life’s path and mission, learning our own values and lessons as we go. Sometimes the lessons we need to learn can only be taught by illness.
There is value in saying, Don't Judge.
Some illnesses can be cured by the power of thought, by the power of attraction *if* they are not Karmic in nature.
In other words, if you’ve made a Soul Contract to experience illness, you are NOT going to get better by thinking positive.
My Personal Experience
I’ve been stuck 100% flat in bed due to my illness for almost 3 years now. And being stuck in bed, is probably the only way I would’ve learned what I needed to. And when people ask me about it and they are sad for me, I want to tell them that I am lucky. I’m not sad anymore because I’ve realized that I am more than my body, I am more than my ability to work. And when I realized that, I became grateful. Grateful for every part of my body that still works, and grateful that I can still create art and use my voice to effect change in the world.
And when I come across an ill-informed Law of Attraction New Ager, and they pick apart my illness and tell me it’s because I’m flawed, that I’m not vibrating right, that my mind is all wrong, and that I would get better if I would fix my thinking – I want to just tell them, that no, no I don’t! My mind is for the first time in the right place and I’ve transcended my need to seek something different than what is. I’ve found acceptance and that’s the most healing thing that I could’ve done. I’ve accepted after 13 years of fighting my illness, that I cannot overcome it. That by giving a bit, I won’t break. That it’s okay to not have the answer and that our lives look messy and flawed and we don’t seem like we are ‘vibrating’ right, and I walk with a limp now, and spend my life on Netflix. It’s okay. Because it’s not about right or vibrations or anything. It’s about your relationship with Spirit, and having Faith. Sometimes you cannot ‘heal’ the thing, you just must say it out loud what that thing is and that you are powerless to change it. And when you have done that there will be a silence, a silence that you can create a whole new reality from. A reality that is even better than the one you knew before.
And when you have finally done this, the last thing you need is some self-righteous New Ager coming along to tell you that God is wrong, that his plan for you was wrong, that it was an accident that I had this illness? No!
I didn’t make an ‘error’ when I chose my Soul Contract. My illness has brought about the qualities that I was incarnated in this lifetime to embody.
What Are Soul Contracts?
When we come down to this earth, before we are born. Imagine we are sitting in heaven with our Soul Family, those people who will form an intimate part of our lives here on Earth, and we say, Hey. I want to work on acceptance, or I want to learn love, or I want to learn freedom. When you agree to those things, you make your Soul Contract, and your Soul Family, the ones you incarnate with, agree to help you work on those things. This plays out on the earth plane by them getting you unfairly thrown in jail, to learn freedom for example. Your welcome, Soul Family!
Soul Family are the ones inextricably linked with us, along with our life circumstances, to teach our Soul the lessons it needs to learn in this lifetime to fulfill our Soul’s Contract. Where does the Soul go once it learns all the lessons? Well, back to the ethereal plane, back to the cosmos from wence it came.
I imagine you get to sit up there and play the hindsight is 20/20 game, or laugh about how absolutely pissed off you were when xyz happened. So when we choose our lives before we incarnate (our Soul Contracts), that illness can be a condition that we chose, in union with Spirit, or God, or the Fates, what have you – we chose illness as our Karmic lesson to learn in this lifetime, so as to teach us the things that only illness can teach.
The Law of Attraction is About Feeling GOOD
So when healers and teachers and preachers preach that if we just got our mind to think better thoughts, is that not a bit presumptious? Maybe a bit egotistical? Are my thoughts not good enough for you? And how would you suppose to know the contents of my thoughts, having just met me? How can you know if I’ve done my Inner Work?
So please, healers, and teachers, and preachers, you lovely New Agers and spirit junkies of this world, don’t forget that the Law of Attraction is about feeling good, increasing our vibration to good. And when we are putting others down or condescending to them that we know what is best for them, that we know that they want to heal and we’ve decided that they haven’t done what they were supposed to – think about it - Have you done what YOU were supposed to? Be inspiring, be loving, be accepting, hold space for what is, have you listened to what that person had to say before you spouted off a recipe for health & mindfulness? Have you considered that the person has accepted their illness and that is all the healing that they needed?
Fancy cute little sayings are great and all, the Law of Attraction is great and all, but make sure that our very human tools, like the Law of Attraction, aren’t negating the very Spirit we are advocating. Please be loving, please be healing, please hold that space, and understand, that as the healers, and teachers, and preachers, and spiritual entrepreneurs of this world, we set the example.
So please use the Law of Attraction as it is meant to be used, as a tool to help people feel better. If it’s not helping people feel better, it’s not helping.
And please think about the ego, that goes into telling someone you’ve just met, what is best for them, or assuming that they haven’t done the necessary discernment in their life and they need you to tell them what that is. Be humble man, be humble. In love, Kai
